# Labour approves Jackdaw gas feild

Zero Hour Published 21 October 2026

Today's approval of the Jackdaw gas field is an act of climate vandalism that flies in the face of the warnings from climate scientists.

Following a summer where communities were on the sharp end of the climate crisis, facing wildfires, record heatwaves and ongoing drought, approving more fossil fuels is only adding fuel to the fire. For months the government has been told that Jackdaw will do nothing to reduce bills and will make no meaningful impact on energy security. And despite their own manifesto commitment for no new oil and gas, it has pressed ahead and approved this gasfield anyway.

The UK is already off track and underprepared for the climate and nature crisis. Approving these fields keeps households on the fossil fuel rollercoaster we were promised we’d get off. Today DESNZ statements are happy to claim that Jackdaw is compatible with our 2050 targets, but what's changed? The Energy Secretary was clear just a few years ago, no new oil and gas if we are serious about tackling climate change.

All eyes now turn to the Government’s pending decision on Rosebank. If it is serious about the transition to renewable energy, lowering the cost of living and tackling the climate emergency, it must reject the field.

The Government has already shown its hand on Jackdaw. Rosebank is its last chance to change course. Will it continue to side with big polluters’ profits, or with the communities already feeling the consequences?
