Survey results from CAN Bill Campaigners
For 5 years, the campaign for the Climate and Nature Bill has been building on the foundations of campaigners’ work advocating for science-led solutions to the climate-nature crisis. It’s the participation from people like you, in constituencies from Shetland to St Ives that have taken the original draft legislation onto the top of the government agenda and now with an opportunity to become law.
That’s why, following the adjournment of the Climate and Nature Bill debate on 24 January, we wanted to hear from you on what’s working, what’s next and how we can help empower you as campaigners. By listening to our supporters and refining our strategies, we can strengthen our collective impact and drive meaningful change.
Last week, we circulated an online survey to get your say and here is what we found
The survey showed that supporters are willing to take action when given the right tools, with the overwhelming majority taking multiple actions online and many also taking actions in their constituencies. However, engagement isn’t just about numbers—it’s about their effectiveness. The more we understand what motivates action, the better we can facilitate meaningful participation with your MPs. Unfortunately, a significant number of campaigners raised a lack of engagement for their MP as a barrier they faced whilst campaigning.
Making Campaign Resources Work Better
We know there are improvements to be made on digital tools on our website but we were delighted to receive very positive feedback about our online resources with our Email Your MP tool getting a 92% approval rating and the Digital Week Action Pack getting 88% approval.
Whilst this is important, we know that with a range of actions, sometimes it’s hard to keep up to date and that was apparent in the survey with 20% of respondents being unaware of all available tools. So we will work to map all the ways you can take action directly in our constituency action pages.
Key Areas for Future Focus
Supporters have made it clear where they want the campaign to go next:
– Increase Public Awareness: We are committed to building on media coverage, endorsements, and advertising campaigns so that more MPs, organisations and the electorate are aware of the need to update legislation on climate and nature.
– Expand Local & In-Person Events: We love meeting CAN Bill campaigners at events and we are already working on a series of online events to enable people from all across the UK to participate. We also know that where we can, in-person events are a great way to socialise and share ideas with other campaigners. We will continue to map out new opportunities for regular campaigner events both in person and online.
– Strengthening Political Engagement: From the General Election in the summer of 2024 through to the second reading it was clear there was an appetite from MPs from across political aisles for strenthening legislation on climate and nature. However, its clear that many of you—despite attempting many pathways to engage your MP still are still facing barriers like stock responses and in some cases even being ignored entirely. So we will work with political allies to leverage ALL MPs to embrace opportunities for a nature-rich UK and ask them to follow the science and back the CAN Bill.
Your feedback helps us shape a roadmap for a stronger, more effective campaign. By incorporating your views, we can improve our strategies, enhance engagement, and drive real change. The fight for climate and nature legislation is far from over, and with continued support, innovation, and determination, we can make a lasting impact.
Together we CAN deliver the action science demands!
