Over the coming weeks we will be updating our websites and launching the next campaign on the road to make the Climate and Nature Bill law – 100 Days.

With a new Government, a new Parliament, we are continuing to keep the pressure up for science-led, joined-up policy to tackle the Climate and Nature crises.

    Together we CAN!

Mayor Sadiq Khan is backing the Climate & Nature Bill!

On the day of the Climate and Ecology (CE) Bill’s second reading in the Lords, where the Bill successfully passed through to Committee stage with all-party support, the Mayor London—Sadiq Khan—has announced he’s backing the Zero Hour campaign!

We’re delighted to announce that the Chair of C40 Cities and the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has thrown his support to the CAN Bill.

Announcing his public endorsement in statement to Zero Hour, and publicly via Twitter, he said:

I’m proud to support the Climate and Nature Bill which aligns with my ambitions to make London a net zero carbon city by 2030. The Bill would ensure that the UK reduces its greenhouse emissions to keep global average warming under 1.5°C—as well as protecting nature, halting and eventually reversing ecological damage.

A green and just recovery is in everyone’s interests by tackling both the climate crisis and the energy and cost of living crisis our we’re currently facing. The Government must not delay action any further and must seize the opportunity for the sake of people and the planet now.

The Mayor’s backing follows a cross-party motion calling on Mr Khan to get behind the Bill campaign on 2 December 2022.

At the time, the Green AM who proposed the motion—Zack Polanski—said “as Chair of C40 Cities, and a supporter of UK100’s Net Zero Pledge, the Mayor can—and should—back this motion.”

Following today’s announcement, Zack Polanksi AM welcomed the news, saying:

This is a big win on the Assembly. I proposed a motion to the Assembly to back the CAN Bill in December—and the Mayor is finally now supporting it! All over the world people have been suffering the effects of climate chaos. We must act now.

This vote of confidence in the CAN Bill from one of the national leaders of the Labour Party is a major milestone for Zero Hour.

We’re excited to be working with directly with the Mayor, the Assembly and supporting AMs to advance our all-party campaign across Greater London—and the UK nations—where we’ll now be looking to Britain’s other directly mayors to follow Sadiq Khan’s leadership.
