MPs gather in support of the CAN Bill

On January 7th, 2025, 70 cross-party MPs joined long-term CAN Bill campaigner Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall & climate justice advocate Domonique Palmer on advancing the Climate and Nature Bill (CAN Bill). This event, hosted in parliament, comes before the Climate and Nature Bills’ crucial Second Reading on January 24th. Here’s how key figures from this event articulated their support:

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, the environmental campaigner and TV chef, spoke about how the CAN Bill finally delivers the joined-up plan NGOs have been calling for stating: “Climate and nature are inextricably linked. The Climate and Nature Bill is incredibly important because it brings together the nature crisis and the climate crisis—which are of course completely interconnected, and makes sure everyone understands just how much it’s vital that we restore nature in order to take care of the climate.”

The moment could not be more urgent and Dominique Palmer, a climate justice activist, stressed, “This can’t wait again for another election cycle, or for another year to pass by and for global temperatures to rise even higher. Now is the time. And I love that this Bill also includes so many aspects of justice, and community as well as people and nature-focused—we are nature defending itself.”

We must embrace this moment to deliver updated legislation on the climate-nature crisis. This is a view shared by over 1000 scientists and emphasised by CAN Bill Sponsor Roz Savage MP  during the event when outlining “Climate and nature have always been important. This bill is aiming to really hold the government to account and say, this cannot wait a moment longer; we can’t keep kicking the can down the road.”

We, at Zero Hour started campaigning for #CANBill for over 4 years and legislation is long overdue, and we were delighted that Wera Hobhouse, Liberal Democrat MP, stressed to attending MPs “The 24 January is our biggest opportunity yet to get the #CANBill through Parliament and into law. Nature, our planet, and the climate crisis can’t wait until the next election. We need action now—and the CAN Bill can hold the government to account.”

The 24 January is our chance to make history and pass ambitious science-led legislation on climate-nature. As the date for the Second Reading draws near, the rallying cry is unequivocal: support the CAN Bill, don’t block it.
