Making sure your People’s Emergency Briefing screening has an impact…

Zero Hour is teaming up with the National Emergency Briefing team to help campaigners screen the People’s Emergency Briefing film when it is released on 7 April. This blog explains why we are doing this and what resources we can offer anyone hosting a screening in their local area.

The National Emergency Briefing was held in November and issued a stark warning about the national security threat posed by climate and nature breakdown.

This warning has since been amplified by the UK security services, MI5 and MI6, in their national security report entitled Global Biodiversity Loss, Ecosystem Collapse and National Security.

Bottom line: without urgent action by the Government, the UK risks social collapse that will impact every single citizen.

THE FILM:

The People’s Emergency Briefing is a 50 minute documentary based on the original briefing designed for a mass audience. It presents the key takeaways from the NEB talk alongside interviews with celebrities and audience members from the briefing.

It is designed to deliver hard scientific facts alongside a hopeful call for audiences to step into action as a community.

The film will be free to download and screen from the NEB team. Please register here to host a screening. You will be sent a screening guide and a facilitation pack by the NEB team.

Following the film screening, audiences will engage in a 45 min discussion session. This can take the form of a Q&A with an attending MP; a facilitated discussion about the issues raised; or a People’s Assembly about next steps.

ZERO HOUR’S KEY ASK:

👉 We want to ensure that the local screenings mobilise people to lobby their MP and the Government for urgent, ambitious legislative action.

👉 Without new legislation that matches the current science, there is no way to tackle a crisis of this scale and urgency.

👉 The Climate and Nature Bill is one obvious solution. It is supported by the majority of the experts speaking at the briefing and would make the UK’s internationally-agreed, science-backed climate and nature targets legally-binding.

Enacting the CAN Bill would unleash transformative change across the whole of UK society to match the call for a Marshall Plan for climate and nature action.

MAKING THE POST SCREENING MOMENT WORK:

We want to use the screenings to mobilise local communities to work together to hold their MP and their Government to account when it comes to calling for robust, science-led action on this national security threat.

To do this we are encouraging screening hosts to:

  • Mobilise your audience into a local WhatsApp group to coordinate next steps after the screening
  • Ask local people to work as a community to lobby your MP and the Government for robust response.
  • Deliver a bespoke ‘ask’ to your MP – Zero Hour can provide these.
  • Request your MP sets up a monthly community meeting to keep local residents informed about the Government’s response to this urgent national security threat.

SUPPORT ZERO HOUR CAN OFFER:

  • Publicise your screen through our constituency mailing list, WhatsApp groups, and local allies.
  • Help you draft a media advisory to inform local press of the screening
  • Partner you with a local climate and nature scientist to help your post film discussion (availability dependent)
  • A briefing pack on your MP and bespoke ‘asks’ for them re Parliamentary questions, joining the Climate and Nature Crisis Caucus, or similar.
  • Help with post screening mobilisation and engagement of local residents
  • A post screening press release to celebrate your success

To access this help, please email [email protected] with details of your screening including date, time, location, booking link and any plans you have for the post screening discussion.
