Graphenstone: Proud to be Part of the Circular Economy

Many low-cost, household acrylic paints that dominate the market can be a risk to human and ecological health. Unfortunately, many commonly used paints contain substances that have highly detrimental environmental impacts when released into the air during drying. These substances are called Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC)s.  For years, many people have been unaware that VOCs in paint form the most toxic component in smog – harmful to lung tissue even in low concentrations and reducing indoor air quality. The health impact from toxic petro-chemical, plastic-based paints is now more widely recognised and consumers are turning away from materials that are toxic to both people and the environment.

Graphenstone is a company that has set a new benchmark in high-quality paint that doesn’t require a heavily polluting production process or reduce indoor air quality.  Graphenstone has proved that there is more to paint than just great colour. Their production process combines minerals such as lime, chalk, clay, and silicate whilst utilising graphene technology – an extraordinarily durable material made from pure carbon.  This produces a product that is durable, part of the circular economy, and health-conscious.

Unfortunately, as the importance of sustainability and eco-friendly products becomes more apparent, many companies have been jumping on the bandwagon with the intent to make sustainability part of their advertising and branding strategies. So-called ‘greenwashing’ has become prevalent across all industries, and paint manufacturing is no exception. Greenwashing within this industry has led consumers to wrongfully believe many products are more eco-friendly than they actually are. When analysing a manufacturer’s credibility on this claim, independently verified certifications that back up marketing claims can be important. In this case, Graphenstone has been awarded 18 international certifications for sustainability such as Cradle to Cradle Gold and Eurofins indoor air comfort Gold. Cradle to Cradle Certified® is a globally recognized measure of safer, more sustainable products made for the circular economy.

Graphenstone has achieved this recognition through producing paints that absorb CO₂ as well as neutralising pollutants such as Nitrogen Oxides, Sulfur Oxides, Carbon Monoxide & VOCs – improving and purifying indoor air quality. Their pure lime paint can remove up to 5.5.kg of CO2 per 15 litre pot. They also utilise innovative technology which allows surfaces to ‘breathe’ underneath the paint, allowing moisture to be released and preventing the build-up of mold.

The CEE Bill Alliance is proud to team up with organisations that are part of the circular economy and are committed to trying to make our daily lives more sustainable – proving that ‘going green’ is more than just a marketing ploy.  Graphenstone is one of over 160 inspiring organisations that have joined the CEE Bill Alliance and are working towards a healthier future for both people and the planet. “What can be more important than protecting this jewel of a planet called Earth with its extraordinary biodiversity. Front and centre of the ethos of Graphenstone Paints is sustainability and our ecological footprint. Cradle to Cradle certified, we offer products that purify the air, absorb CO2, and return to nature at end of life. The CEE Bill is incredibly important. It raises awareness of the huge challenges we all face and the changes that are urgently required. Surely this needs to be shouted from the rooftops and supported by as many people and enterprises as possible. Longer term, almost nothing else matters.” – Patrick Folkes, Director.
