Our response to the Mission Zero report?
It’s time to enact the CAN Bill to “keep 1.5°C alive”.
Chris Skidmore MP should be congratulated for promoting the benefits and urgency of rapidly transitioning away from fossil fuels.
His Review—which Zero Hour fed into—and subsequent Misson Zero report recognises that we cannot achieve our net zero targets without restoring nature—and acknowledges the urgent need for land use change, particularly to enhance natural carbon stores, such as woodland and peatland.
This report should finally put to bed the argument, in some quarters of the Conservative Party, that net zero is an unaffordable ‘nice to have’. The reality is that the costs of climate and ecological inaction—financial, political and societal—are far, far greater.
What we need now, following Mr Skidmore’s review—and Zero Hour’s landmark Net zero: The Ambition Gap report—is an all out effort to bridge the gap between the pace of the UK’s current and inadequate emissions reductions, and the ambition needed to “keep 1.5°C alive”.
This includes working to restore the natural world, our best ally in the fight against climate change, which was a glaring hole in the UK Government’s Net Zero Strategy.
Following COP27 and COP15, a joined-up environmental strategy—that aims to tackle the climate and ecological emergency, hand in hand—is how the UK Government will achieve the pledges made on the international stage.
This is what the all-party endorsed Climate and Nature Bill would deliver—a serious, science-led plan that would reverse the destruction of nature and transition the UK to a cheaper, cleaner, renewable energy future.
The strongest response that the Prime Minister could make in response to Mr Skidmore’s review would be to back the CAN Bill—and secure a liveable future.
